We Only Have Today

Sometime in the distant past,

I learned that these would seldom last;

A friend, a love… a fire.

What’s brought to life… too soon expires.

Life and living can seem so long,

Until you get to the end of your song.

The days, the months, the years, an age.

What’s brought to life… too soon expires.

There isn’t much to my song,

Just an old man reminiscing long,

While grasses fade to yellow straw.

Flowers bend, their beauty fades,

Leaves will lose their grip and fall.

What’s brought to life… too soon expires.

Destruction’s Part in Construction

“…as fire lays hold of what falls into it, by which a small light would have been extinguished: but when the fire is strong, it soon appropriates to itself the matter which is heaped on it, and consumes it, and rises higher by means of this very material.” -Marcus Aurelius
